Mabel - Sports & Performance
From being a tricky dog to train to being voted Best Bitch and Best Collie at the Commandos Annual Flyball Awards night, Mabel the six-year-old Border Collie has been nominated by the British Flyball Association (BFA) as its Hardest Working Dog for her dedication and performance to this fast-paced sport.
Mabel’s owner, Janet Anderson, says: “Mabel loves flyball, but she was not the easiest dog to train… In her first competition, she only raced in the red lane as she ran down the centre of the jumps in the blue lane! She also needed another one of our family dogs at the back of the ring where she could see them, or she wouldn’t race at all.
“Over time, her confidence increased; and, in 2018, she ran in the Crufts team, reaching the semi-finals. 2019 proved to be her breakthrough year, and at Crufts she ran with her Karmandos teammates, finishing in third place.
“At the BFA Outdoor Championships 2019 she raced in Division One, as part of the Commandos Toot ‘n’ Go team, and they finished as runners up. But, at the BFA Indoor Championships 2019, she again raced in Division One with the same team and finished in 4th place.
“In 2019, she ran in 29 competitions. In her first year of competing, she earned 1,205 points and finished 824th in the breed standings; but, in 2019, she’d earned 10,830 points and finished as top point-scorer for all breeds.
“Her personal best time is 3.94 seconds, which she gained in 2018; but, in her last competition of 2019, she ran 3.99 seconds – very close to her personal best.
“She is the ‘height dog’ in her team and mostly runs over her own height, 11-inches – she also runs in any position and loves her tuggy.
“To finish the year, at the Commandos Annual Flyball Awards night she was voted as the Best Bitch and Best Collie by the club members. Mabel could not have achieved any of this without her teammates.”
Do you think that Mabel’s hard work and dedication to her sport means that she deserves to scoop the first category in the bid to become Autarky Hardest Working Dog 2020? Then make sure you cast your vote when voting goes live on January 20th, 2020.
