Help & Advice
Everyone has heard the saying ‘A dog is for life and not just for Christmas’. This is so true but unfortunately so many people underestimate the care and attention a dog requires. As nutritional experts, we are aware that correct feeding plays a very important role in ensuring a happy and healthy life for your dog but there are many other factors to consider as well.
Water
A supply of fresh clean water should always be available in order to avoid dehydration.
Visiting your vet
Any pet will benefit from regular check ups at a vets so ensure you and your dog are registered with a reputable veterinary surgery.
Dental care
Unfortunately dental problems can be common amongst dogs so appropriate care should be taken to avoid problems arising. Many dental hygiene products are available such as chews, toys, toothbrushes and paste so we advise you seek some advice and carry out a regular routine and checks on your dog.
Worming
Preventative treatment must be given to your dog for roundworms; every three to six months (frequency may vary due to the age & condition of your dog). In addition, treatment for tapeworms, hookworms and whipworms should be given twice yearly. There are many treatments available but it is best to consult your vet for a recommended one unless you are an experienced dog owner.
Fleas
These little creatures are very difficult to get rid of once a dog has them so again preventative action is the best protection. Consult your vet for a recommended course of protection.
Exercise
Walkies! is the favourite pastime of many dogs. Your dog will require regular exercise for the entirety of his life, two or three walks a day (depending on age, size, physical ability and breed of your dog). There are many benefits of exercise including controlling weight levels, maintaining joint mobility and preventing boredom. Remember, Autarky Mature Lite is formulated for the more mature dog that is likely to be only capable of small amounts of exercise.
Your dog will welcome company and the opportunity to build a relationship with you. Play time can help with building this friendship as well as forming part of your dog’s exercise routine. Toys that are designed specifically for dogs are available at most pet shops and supermarkets.
Enrolling in a training class or sport such as agility can be fun, educational and good exercise for both you and your dog.
Grooming
Regular grooming is required by all dogs. Depending on their coat type grooming may be needed daily or weekly. Ensure you use the appropriate equipment, which you will be able to purchase from pet shops and use the time to interact with your dog and make it as fun and as comfortable for your dog as possible. As with most things, starting when your dog is at an early age will help. If you do experience behaviour problems with your dog, then do consult your vet as he may be able to offer grooming tips that will help. Your regular grooming routine could also be used as an opportunity to look for any abnormalities, such as cuts or lumps.
Identification
It is a legal requirement for all dogs to wear a collar and tag so it is essential that your pet wears them. You may also want to consider micro-chipping; your vet will be able to offer you advice and guidance.
Insurance
Dog insurance is no different from any other type of insurance, there are always several companies offering cover at very different prices and with different policies. Ensure you do your research to get the best one for you and seek advice from others if necessary.
